The Green Knight is a bold attempt at re-imagining its source poem, but tonally, it can’t keep up with itself. The script bounces back and forth between hero’s epic to character study to ghost story in a way that seems less like “genre-bending” and more like tonal confusion with itself. Dev Patel gives a solid performance as Gawain, despite his character being severely under-written. All together, a brilliant final sequence & ending just wasn’t enough to save The Green Knight from its own ambition.
