I'm getting pretty used to being blown away by Joachim Trier. He’s interested in the ways we respond to internal crises, and in Louder Than Bombs, his characters are put through the emotional ringer yet again: how deep can the trauma of the death of a matriarch seep into the cracks in fissures that are one's own personal demons? An identical hand is dealt to two sons and one husband, but the beauty (and tragedy) of these stories is in their contrasts. Trier's poetic style is executed to near-perfection, weaving in and around all three stories with bittersweet grace. Never indulgent, and probably providing enough emotional depth to sustain another 15-20 minutes if it wanted to, Louder Than Bombs is yet another impressive entry into the catalogue of Joachim Trier.
