Revisiting a film and finding yourself less enthused than you were the first time around is a terrible feeling.
A Ghost Story is a decent movie with a lot of ideas that don’t necessarily land. Upon rewatch, it seems more wrapped up in its own artifice than interested at getting at something real. I always felt the long takes were indulgent, but this time around it felt insufferable (that stupid pie scene is really ridiculous). Lowery seems to be interested with the idea of photography and composition as a means of capturing the objective truth of a moment, which I’m totally on board for (in theory at least), but the problem, which I don’t believe is unsolvable, is translating this to a compelling story.
